Projects

United Way

WA ALICE exploration. The goal is to tie together multiple data sources: Kindergarten Readiness, Reading Scores, High-School Graduation, and ALICE (asset-limited, income-constrained, employed) rates.

This is a very ambitious goal, but also super interesting, and I think it’ll be quite awhile before I get real results.

The code for this project can be found on my GitHub page here.

United Way COVID Volunteer scorecard. Getting a handle on the value & impact of UW volunteers in Thurston county.

OUUC

Volunteer opportunities at Olympia Unitarian Universalist Church. Just a quick viz/tool that links to Google Sheets to stay up-to-date.

NWONA

Combined my data hobby & my running hobby by running every street in the neighborhood & snapping pictures of every piece of graffiti.

The real slog was going through every picture and adding tags for ‘Medium’, ‘Message’, and ‘Surface’.

The code used to grab tags and lat/long from the image files is here. At some point I plan on hosting all the images on this site, then using URL actions to link out on hover… that’ll make this a much cooler dashboard.

Everything Else

Exploration of housing permits in Thurston County. Put this together for a local newspaper.

A look at industry donations to the commissioner for public lands. Put this together for a local newspaper.

This was a fun one – my wife needed some charts in a very specific APA format. After fighting with Excel forever, she asked if I could figure something out in Python. Came up with this code which did the trick!
